STEVE KINNEY is the President of EDCO, the Economic Development
Corporation of Oxnard. He has been training with Alfred for six years.
"It's not about the hour at the
gym (although the feeling of
"Yes I can" that comes during
that time is pretty good in
itself). It's about what
impact that hour at the gym
makes on the other 23 hours
in my day. Certainly I'm
stronger now, but even more
importantly I feel younger
and more energized about life
now at age 60 than I did at 45.
That means I can do more
with every day that I have -
put more into it, and get more
out of it. And. I don't mind
the fact that I'm driving a golf
ball further now than ever
before."
When I first approached Alfred about training at Future Fitness,
my motivation was basically defensive: I wanted to prevent
what I was feeling as a slide into the athletic inflexibility and
physical discomfort of old age at a time when I wasn't yet
prepared or willing to be feeling old. At age 54 I was beginning to
feel the rigidity of motion that I associated with 70-year-olds,
and my state of mind was, "No, this isn't going to happen."
What I've seen occurring over the six years that I've been training
with Al is that my motivation has shifted from defensive to
something entirely future-oriented. I'm no longer even worried
about battling a premature state of "Senior-ness." Instead, I'm
thinking about attaining levels of fitness that I've never
experienced in my life - not in college, not after boot camp in the
Army, not ever. I'm doing things now at age 60 that are virgin
territory for me, and my outlook is "okay, what's next?" If
that's not a way to stay young, mentally and physically, I don't
know what is! I fully believe that by staying in my work-out
regimen with Alfred, I'll be even more fit when I reach age 70 than
I am now. What better way to face the future of aging than to see
it as nothing other than opportunity!
